ER Visit For Lauren

The dreaded call at 2:05 was a from a phone number at school. We instantly thought...oh great...what has Drew done now. To our surprise it was Lauren. The nurse said we needed to come and get her and that she needed to seek medical attention. Any other day it wouldn't have been a problem but today was not a good day for this. No shower, no makeup, had high school carpool pick up in 20 minutes, dinner was on the stove cooking, soccer practice at 4:30, soccer practice at 6:00...you get the picture. We ran up to get her and when I walked into the nurses office there sat my sweet girl in tears with a funny wrap on her head. I teared up and had to walk out. It is tough seeing her cry because I know she is really hurt. Lauren hardly ever cries! Off to the ER we went. The entire way there she cried and cried...."Please no stitches" then it went to "Can't Kurt do it? I only want Kurt to stitch me up." We tried to call him but he wasn't at the office today. The picture belows looks really good....nice and clean. While we were waiting she kept reminding me that is was activity day today and she WAS going. It is her last one and she loves her leaders and was looking forward to going. Well...that didn't work out today. We got back in room #17 and the doctor came in. He asked Lauren if it hurt....."no"....really I said.....she thought if she told him it didn't hurt then he wouldn't stitch her up. She was hoping for glue. No such luck. He left the room and blood was still running down her neck from him doing his thing and she said...mom...it hurts. HELLO...he just asked you that. What she will do to not see a needle.

Here was the plan.....give her some lit to numb her ear up....rest for 30 minutes.......come back and really numb it up with the needle then stitch it up. Lauren did an awesome job. When the Dr. gave her the shot you could see her hand clinch. It was quite numb all the way up where he started. Just a few spots had some feeling left. Then he started to stitch her up and Drew was giving his "ohhhh" "ssss" at every stitch. The doctor kept looking over at him to not be so loud because Lauren didn't even know he was stitching her up until the back side when it wasn't quite numb. What a great sport she was.
The best part of the ER visit was when the doctor was talking to her to break the ice and he said "Are you smokin' at school?" The look on her face was priceless.....she looked at me like mom...he is crazy. Then in her quite, unsure voice...no...I don't smoke! We all started laughing. Explaining to her that he meant getting good grades. I can only imagine what was going on in her head....he is wondering if I smoke at the age of 12 and you are letting him sew up my ear? What are you doing to me mom!!!
How this happened: apparently a boy decided to be a boy and push the gate open really fast and hard and it swung back and hit Lauren right on her ear. It cut her ear about 1 inch but it was cut on both sides. So she ended up with 3 stitches on the front and 5 on the back. Dr. left the front a little looser so if anything from the dirty gate needed to get out it wouldn't have to split it open and would be able to seep out. Made sense to us. He did a great job, smooth line and he was a great Dr. While he was sewing her up he told us that right now she is his daughter and would sew her up just as good as he would on his own.

We came home to a great big card from her class. Lauren is so lucky to have such a great teacher and classmates!

Poopy BOYS!
I'm so glad the Dr. took such great care of her and it looks great. Lucky it wasn't on her beautiful face.
Good job being so brave Lauren!

Erin

Way to be brave Lauren! I think it's great that she still wanted to go to Activity Day. The ER stinks but I'm so glad that it wasn't anymore serious. Boys can be so dumb!
